Student to Mentor

Dr. James Newton

The greatest part of teaching is when a student you have worked with takes the next step and becomes an expert. This happened to me when I worked with a teenager named Jimmy Newton. A good high school player who struggled with some competitive pressures, Jimmy was a highly motivated student. Part of Jimmy's issue with tennis was that the tennis teachers he worked with tried to model Jimmy after a player like Pete Sampras, whose game was based on big serves and an attacking style. Jimmy's skill set was more suited to an aggressive baseline game like Andre Agassi's. Jimmy and I worked on several areas of tennis while he was in 10th through 12th grade.

We worked on giving him great slice and American twist second serves, which became weapons for Jimmy. The ability to get second serves in safely also allowed Jimmy to hit his first delivery harder.

We changed Jimmy from a two-handed backhand to a one-handed backhand. This gave Jimmy much more ability to move on the court and reach more balls. He could also hit with both topspin and underspin. His return of serve was also stronger with the one-hander. The two-hander made him much stiffer as a player.
